Understanding and Addressing Burnout in Individuals with Autism
Share
Autistic burnout is more than just feeling tired—it’s a state of intense mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion caused by chronic stress, masking, and sensory overload. It can lead to shutdowns, increased anxiety, and a loss of everyday skills.
Signs of autistic burnout include sudden withdrawal, emotional outbursts, and difficulty completing routine tasks. It often occurs when someone feels forced to “keep up” in a world that doesn’t accommodate their needs.
To support recovery:
Reduce demands and give space to rest.
Adjust environments to lower sensory input.
Encourage self-advocacy and validate their feelings.
Recognizing and responding to autistic burnout early can help individuals feel safe, supported, and empowered.
