Autism Is Not Narcissism
Share
Autism and narcissism are often misunderstood—and sometimes wrongly linked. In truth, they are very different.
Autistic individuals may struggle with social cues or eye contact, and they might prefer routines or focused interests. This can sometimes be misread as being “cold” or “self-centered.” But that’s not the case. Autistic people often care deeply—they just communicate and connect differently.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), on the other hand, involves an inflated sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy—traits not associated with autism.
Assuming autistic traits are signs of narcissism is not only incorrect—it’s harmful. It can prevent people from getting the right support and being seen for who they truly are.
Understanding the difference fosters compassion and breaks down stigma. Let’s make space for neurodiversity, not stereotypes.
