Can Autism Go Away?
Share
No, autism does not “go away.” Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference—it's not something a person outgrows or is cured of.
That said, many autistic individuals grow and change over time. With the right support, they may learn new skills, improve communication, and adapt to different environments. Some may even appear “less autistic” as they develop strategies to manage challenges—but that doesn’t mean the autism is gone.
In some cases, people mask their traits to fit in, which can be exhausting and lead to burnout. This is why acceptance, not just surface-level change, is important.
Autism isn’t something to be fixed. It’s something to understand and support—because thriving looks different for everyone.
