High Functioning Autistic Girls

High-functioning autism (HFA) refers to individuals on the autism spectrum who have average or above-average intelligence but still experience challenges related to communication, social interactions, and sensory processing. While many of the traits are similar to autism in general, HFA can look different in girls.

Girls with autism are often better at masking their symptoms, which means they might learn to mimic social behaviors or hide their difficulties in public. As a result, autism in girls can be harder to diagnose, especially when they’re younger.

Some common signs in high-functioning autistic girls include:

Difficulty making or maintaining friendships

Intense focus on a specific hobby or interest

Struggles with social communication, like understanding body language or tone of voice

Sensory sensitivities, such as being sensitive to light, noise, or textures

Anxiety or depression due to masking and social pressures

Because girls may not show classic signs as clearly as boys, they are sometimes diagnosed later in life. Early support can help them build coping strategies and thrive in school and social situations.

If you think your daughter may be on the spectrum, seeking an assessment from a healthcare provider who specializes in autism can provide clarity and lead to valuable support.
