Nonverbal Autism
Share
Nonverbal autism refers to autistic individuals who do not speak or speak very little. While they may not use spoken words, they still have thoughts, emotions, and ways to communicate.
Here’s what’s important to understand:
- Nonverbal doesn't mean non-communicative — many use gestures, sounds, facial expressions, or tools like AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices to express themselves.
- Cognitive ability varies — some nonverbal individuals are highly intelligent but struggle with speech production.
- Early intervention and support can help improve communication skills, whether through speech therapy, sign language, or technology.
Respect is key. Nonverbal individuals deserve to be heard, understood, and supported just like anyone else. Communication is more than words.
