Signs of Autism: What to Look For
Share
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and processes the world. Signs can vary widely, but here are some common ones to look for across different ages:
- Social Challenges: Difficulty with eye contact, reading social cues, or engaging in typical back-and-forth conversation.
- Communication Differences: Delayed speech, flat tone, echolalia (repeating words), or preferring nonverbal ways to communicate.
- Repetitive Behaviors: Hand-flapping, rocking, lining up objects, or strict adherence to routines.
- Intense Interests: Deep focus on specific topics or hobbies, often with impressive detail and knowledge.
- Sensory Sensitivities: Over- or under-reacting to sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
These signs may appear in early childhood, but some people aren’t diagnosed until later. Every autistic person is unique, and not all will show the same signs. Early support can make a big difference.
